Growing food in Latvia isn't about fighting the climate. It's about understanding it, respecting it, and working with the seasons we actually have. That's when gardening becomes something real—not a struggle, but a genuine connection to where you live.

Andris Ozoliņš
What He Does

Specialized Knowledge

14 years helping Latvian gardeners grow food and create green spaces in urban settings, short summers, and challenging Baltic conditions.

Raised Bed Gardening

Designing and building raised beds specifically engineered for Latvia's short growing season. He's developed a simplified system that maximizes yield while accounting for frost risk and soil preparation timing.

Urban Dārzs Development

Helping Rīga residents establish productive gardens in limited spaces—balconies, courtyards, rooftops, and community allotments. He focuses on practical solutions for real urban constraints.

Vegetable Selection & Timing

Identifying which vegetables thrive in Rīga's climate and when to plant them for success. His knowledge covers transplanting schedules, frost dates, and varieties proven to mature before autumn arrives.

Baltic Perennial Selection

Curating ornamental plants and flowers that survive Latvia's Zone 4b winters and deliver consistent color and texture year after year. He specializes in hardy perennials that don't just survive—they thrive.

Professional Path

From Family Garden to Expert Consultant

A decade and a half of growing, learning, and teaching others how to succeed with plants in Latvia's climate.

1

Early Years: Family Roots

Andris grew up in a family with a long gardening tradition. His grandmother maintained a thriving allotment garden on the outskirts of Rīga, and he spent summers learning how to coax vegetables from the soil despite short growing seasons and unpredictable weather. That early foundation shaped everything he'd later become.

2

2006–2010: Horticultural Education

He completed his diploma in Horticultural Sciences at the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Environmental Protection in Jelgava, specializing in climate adaptation strategies for cool-season crop production. His studies combined traditional gardening knowledge with modern agricultural science.

3

2010–2015: Rīga City Parks Department

After graduation, Andris spent five years with the Rīga City Parks Department, managing community garden initiatives and developing frost-resistant planting schemes for public spaces. He worked directly with urban gardeners and learned firsthand what actually works—and what doesn't—in city conditions.

4

2015–Present: Independent Practice & Content

In 2015, Andris pioneered a simplified raised bed system specifically engineered for Latvian conditions. He documented this work through his blog, which grew into comprehensive guides published across multiple platforms. Today, as Senior Gardening Consultant at flurenberg SIA, he combines practical field expertise with accessible educational content that helps hundreds of Latvian gardeners each year.

What Drives Him

Philosophy & Approach

The Core Belief

Andris believes every urban gardener in Latvia—regardless of space, experience level, or confidence—should be able to grow fresh vegetables and create beautiful green spaces. He doesn't accept excuses like "the climate's too harsh" or "I don't have room." Instead, he shows people how to work within real constraints and succeed anyway.

Science Meets Experience

His approach combines scientific precision with practical wisdom gained from 14 years of trial, error, and success in the field. When he recommends a perennial for Zone 4b, or advises on transplant timing for Rīga's fickle spring, he's drawing from both horticultural study and real-world testing. He doesn't just tell you what to do—he explains why it works.

Demystifying Gardening

Andris makes gardening accessible. He's seen too many people intimidated by technical jargon or discouraged by their first failures. His content—whether blog posts, guides, or one-on-one consultations—strips away unnecessary complexity and focuses on what actually matters for growing food and flowers in Latvia.
